Planning for your retirement

Retirement may seem a long way away, but before you know it that time will be just around the corner, be prepared well in advance. It is not something to start planning in your 60’s it needs to be planned at least a decade before. Planning ahead is a vital thing in the years moving towards that big transition in your life, it may not seem important in your mid-life years, but it certainly is if you want to ensure you have your ‘ENOUGH’ for that time in your life, bearing in mind that statistics show that we are living longer.

It can start with a few small steps:

  • Be Prepared
  • Pension Forecast
  • Build your cashflow model
  • Your will
  • Minimise Debt
  • Transition

Have the conversation with your partner about what you both would like your retirement to look like just so that you are both on the same page. Don’t forget we know what you are retiring from, but what are you retiring to?

Here at Hartcliff we can sit down and talk about your goals and aspirations for your later in life years, we can do some careful planning and work on a cash flow plan that will show how much you need to save now for those retirement years to give you the lifestyle you would like and the peace of mind to go into the transition feeling comfortable with what your financial situation will be.

Planning for your retirement can start with a few small steps:

  • Gather information and up to date statements of your pension plans
  • Work out your likely retirement income
  • Look towards cuts in your spending and settling outstanding debts
  • Check to see if you need to increase contributions to give a last push to increase your
    retirement income
  • Decide when to start taking your pension
  • Think about how the transition will affect your mental wellbeing, now is the time to strengthen
    social and family ties
  • Make sure you are prepared
  • Your will – it is important to have your will up to date, Powers of Attorney and property deeds
    all in order
  • Speak to us at Hartcliff to get your cash flow forecast, this helps to make sense of what you
would like your ‘Enough’ to be and the reality of what your ‘Enough’ is likely to be. The plan can take you up to retirement and then through your retirement years

Your financial situation will inevitably change, your income will probably be less than when you were working, worrying about if you will have ‘enough’ to retire does not have to be as big a worry as you think if you put the right planning in to place. It might be that your transition into retirement is a gentle one, taking less hours at work before finally retiring. It might be changing jobs into a part time post with less stresses, there are lots of ways to go into retirement gently.

When you finally make the decision to hang up your hat on your working life, it is important to fill your time wisely, no one wants to be bored and to feel worthless. Engage in community groups, make an effort to grow your social life, take up more physical activity, you can join various groups to meet new friends, take up new hobbies. It is important to find a sense of purpose, develop a schedule, focus on wellbeing, but most of all have fun and enjoy this new found freedom that allows you to do what you want, when you want with whom you want. It isn’t all about catching up on all those box sets that you haven’t seen or polishing golf clubs ready for action, it is what you make it, so start now by preparing so that you have that peace of mind that you will be able to fulfil your retirement dreams.

A pension is a long-term investment not normally accessible until age 55. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down, which would have an impact on the level of pension benefits available. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.
